A Godard Life

Maybe it's a woman-thing, but the search for beauty is the penultimate. That why we watch french films, buy candles, paint finger nails... start blogs. But the older I get, the more I wonder how much I'll be clinging to my fantasies of beauty (like living in a Godard film) or stuck in someone else's notion of what beauty is (like the art in my boss' office, below). And then I wonder, what's worse?

Yes, I'll just have to fool myself with French fantasies on the weekends and try to forget the work week... quel dommage.

DIFFICULTY SLEEPING


There was a time, not long ago when I considered myself a good sleeper. I could curl up in a cardboard box, couch, grassy hill, strangers bed, and within seconds of my head hitting the surface, find myself in a deep slumber. Those days are gone.

Chalk it up to stress, anxiety, lifestyle, poor diet or, missing my old boyfriend, this not sleeping business is no fun. As the circles under my eyes get darker, and the number of sheep I count at night grow larger, it occurrs to me that perhaps I ought to invest in a new mattress. The sleep experts say you are supposed to replace your mattress every 5-7 years. I bought a futon in college and lets just say, it is really warm to my form. Seeing as though the average person spends 1/3 of their life in bed, I decided to bite the bullet and splurge for the good stuff.

My brand new queen size Serta perfect sleeper mattress and box spring arrived this afternoon. I rushed out to target to purchase a pair of 100% organic sheet sets to go with it, as my old full size sheets didn't quite fit. I am still adjusting to the new shape of my bedroom now that I am missing some floor space, but I am anxious to see if perhaps tonight, I can get more than, an occasional good nights sleep.



SWEET DREAMS, A.K.A. BLOOD ORANGE FLIP


1/2 oz juice of blood orange
1/4 oz lemon
1/2 oz simple syrup
2 oz hendricks gin
1 egg

give it a few good shakes to emulsify, then add ice and shake hard.
strain into glass and top with soda for a nice meringue. Garnish with
3 drops of angostura bitters.

Smooth Sailing

This morning the BBC had a segment on tying knots, which got me thinking about all the knots I had forgotten how to tie since I took a boating class at 15. I suppose I'd better resolve to at least re-master the two half-hitches, which is enough to look like I know what I'm doing on the off chance that I'm asked yachting this summer.

And, the appropriate cocktail?

Smooth Sailing

Ingredients

2 oz bourbon
2 oz cream
soda

Instructions

Mix bourbon and cream with cracked ice in a shaker and serve in a tumbler, topped up with club soda. Sip with striped shirt and white boat shoes.

Cautionary Tales

When we first discussed doing a blog about drinking and the associated life, we thought cautionary tales might be an apt title. I mean, how many times had we found ourselves talking of the mistakes made after a night drinking? Or, how lonely and desperate it could make us feel while doing it? Countless. Of course drinking doesn't have to be that way, and often isn't, but if we're going to do it over and over with mixed results then there has to be reflection.

That's why it felt odd to just watch Bowie's first movie "The Man Who Fell to Earth", which is its own cautionary tale about the excesses of humanity... namely Beefeater Gin and TV.

So, along with all the neat alcohol-related things will try to post about here, we'll also inevitably talk about the things that - to paraphrase Oscar Wilde - leave one wanting more.

Lillet Marshmallows

Lillet Marshmallows

  • 3 (1/4-ounce) envelopes unflavored gelatin
  • 3/4 cup Lillet Blanc, divided
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/4 cup water
  • About 1/2 cup confectioners sugar for dusting and dredging
Equipment: a stand mixer fitted with whisk attachment; a candy thermometer

I would love to make and eat these. Gelatin bedamned.
